Tribal Consumption Survey
Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation
EI is providing technical assistance and representation during the implementation of a statistically valid and culturally relevant tribal consumption survey for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (CCT). The survey will provide input into the evaluation of potential tribal health risks associated with exposure to contaminated tribal resources. The Colville Indian Reservation covers 2,100 square miles located in Northeastern Washington State, and tribal resources have been contaminated by pollution in the Upper Columbia River, extending from the U.S./Canadian Border to the Grand Coulee Dam.
The tribal consumption survey will define specific dietary, as well as other resource uses/practices that may result in exposure to pollutants, and quantify exposure to these local resources. The survey will gather such information as what resources are being used (plants and animals), how much are the top consumers of those resources consuming, are any tribal members avoiding resources that they normally would be consuming, and linking nutritional information to consumption rates. The survey also helped define future data needs, including prioritizing types and locations of resources for collection and contaminant analysis. This project also includes formulation of and participation on an Advisory Council, determination of key survey specifications, training for and interviewing tribal members on a quarterly basis to capture seasonal variations in resource use, data analysis, and ongoing data communications.
