EMS General Awareness and Audit Training

US EPA

EI developed and presented a half-day course on EMS awareness and presented this course at various EPA facilities nationwide. The course provided EPA’s senior managers and staff with an understanding of EMSs and how they are relevant to EPA’s day-to-day activities. For this workshop, EI developed interactive mechanisms of instruction to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and presented real world experiences as examples to make the training more practical and help clarify difficult concepts or areas of confusion. The course covered relevant EPA policies and Executive Orders; the development and correlation of international EMS standards such as ISO 14000 and EPA-promulgated standards such as Performance Track and the Code of Environmental Management Principles; design for environment-focused EMS; and compliance-focused EMS.

EI also developed and conducted a two-day EMS auditor training course at EPA facilities nationwide. The course provided information to EPA staff on how to become EMS auditors, conduct effective audits, and provide support on EMSs within the agency. The course explained the auditing process and provided participants with lessons learned from personal auditing experience. The course dissected the entire life cycle of an EMS, from policy and planning to implementation and review. The two-day course also included an analysis of the similarities and differences of various EMS programs and their specific requirements; EMS development and implementation programs covered in the course included Performance Track, the Code of Environmental Management Principles, environmental management reviews, compliance-focused EMS and ISO 14001. EI developed for the course customized training materials that fit the specific needs and goals of the US EPA.
