EMS Implementation Support

US Navy

EI provided environmental management system (EMS) implementation support for US Naval facilities across the Atlantic States, including updating and assessment of and development of ISO-14001 conforming EMSs. EI assisted Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic - Hampton Roads (CNRMA-HR) in Virginia, Naval Station Mayport in Florida, Naval Station New London in Connecticut, and Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island in updating and assessing the ISO 14001 conformance of their existing EMS. EI performed EMS audits at all locations, including extensive document review and staff interviews and, during and subsequent to on-site visits, revised EMS procedures and ancillary documentation and provided follow-up advice to facility EMS coordinators about strategies to improve their installations' environmental performance and ISO 14001 conformance.

EI also provided direct support to the EMS Coordinators at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Atlantic Detachment (NCTAMS LANT DET) Cutler in Cutler, Maine, at Naval Support Unit (NSU) Saratoga Springs in Saratoga Springs, New York, and at Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Sugar Grove in Sugar Grove, West Virginia. EI's EMS experts visited each of the activities in order to review current EMS documentation and practices, interview staff members about same, and tour the activities to accurately gauge EMS progress and implementation gaps. Post-visit, the EI EMS experts worked with the activity EMS Coordinators over telephone and e-mail to develop ISO-14001-conforming EMS procedures and documentation, and provided each with a list of “action items” that must be implemented to achieve true ISO 14001 conformance.
