Causal Analysis of Oil Spills in Washington Waters
Washington OSAC
EI analyzed the causal factors that contributed to vessel related spills and incidents that occurred in Washington waters between 1993 and 2006. The study primarily focused on vessels greater than 300 gross tons in weight. Available reports and data, obtained from the Washington Department of Ecology and the United States Coast Guard, were reviewed to determine contributing and root causal factors. The reports and data were examined to identify trends in causal factors associated with information such as vessel type, activity and time. This project is part of a larger initiative taken by the Washington Oil Spill Advisory Council (OSAC) to assist in improving oil spill preparedness in Washington State.
